Body Language of the Soleá

“Flamenco is the perfection of the Imperfect.”

Bailaora, Cristina Hoyos

Class is this Thursday, February 02, at 6pm.

Body Language of the Soleá

As we continue our journey through the soleá, I’d like to encourage you to use your imagination. Don’t let the grand mystery of the ancient art of flamenco stop you from allowing yourself the freedom of expression. This is the essence of who you are after all and what flamenco is all about!

Marcaje

Marcaje are the steps that marks the compás (time/rhythm) in the palo (song form). Of course, the fundamental mechanics of marcaje is important but just as important is to let go of counting and start expressing.

Soleá, is fluid and un-rushed. It’s like moving through molasses––fragrant but at the same time the flavor is robust and smoky.

Find Your Inspiration

Eva Yerbabuena

Drop the needle at about 3 min, 14 sec. Al Cante - Juan Reina and Antonio Saavedra. Toque - Paco Jarana.

“[She] does nothing but says everything!”

Watch how Eva Yerbabuena treats the marcaje, in her performance of the soleá. She is un-rushed but deliberate. As my Tia Fatíma––who was a flamenca of extraordinary talent, musicality and rhythm––would say, “[She] does nothing but says everything!”

Eva use every inch of her non-verbal cures: arms, torso, and lines, tells a mesmerizing story with breaks of exaggerated movement that are small and tight but then syncs right back into the un-rushed pilgrimage of the soul.

I look forward to continuing our journey…

Enjoy!

Flamenco Shoes & Dance Apparel

If you don’t have flamenco shoes yet, no worries. Come to class with your own shoes. Try to make sure that the soles are not rubber and that it has straps. 😉

Character shoes are the next best thing. And you can find them at any local dance supply/apparel store in your area.

Whenever you are ready to make the jump to authentic flamenco shoes and apparel, the stores I recommend are

Prices are reasonable and have stores in the US. It’s worth checking out.
